I love reading and hated the idea that I would be breakthrouhg myself to read faster at the expense of enjoyment or comprehension. But this book pointed out that there are ways to read much faster that can help with both.

It does come down to that old paradox about quantity vs. So, after researching books on speed reading, I found this one with the highest praise and reviews and started in on it. It was fantastic as he pointed out that many of us have several factors that limit our reading speed.

One is that our eyes make saccads from word to word instead of moving smoothly. Watch anyone’s eyes closely who is reading and you’ll see that this is the case.

But Kump points out, you can force your eyes to move faster by dragging your finger under the words and then your eyes will flow and you can actually force them to move faster. Also, you can read faster if you practice. After only 2 weeks, and with some tedious measurements, I found I really could force myself to read almost twice as fast. Another little trick he points out is that many of us read as slowly to ourselves as we do when we read out loud, even though there is no vocal cord limit to how fast our eyes move, we still pronounce the words to ourselves as we read.

That is a habit that is hard to break, but when worked at, can increase our reading speed dramatically. Loved the book, it changed the way I read. But it was hard for me to have the self discipline to do all the exercises, and keep timing myself to measure my progress.
