The Book of Abramelin – Wikipedia
A lot of the material presented and explained by Dehn is worth the price of the book alone. One of the main points of this new translation is to correct the mistakes of MacGregor Mathers version and others.
But what Dehn abranelin out is that this is not Mathers fault. At the time Mathers translation and work was flawless. It was that he never rehn the full version to work with in the first place. Dehn actually gives Mathers his place in the history of the text and puts Mathers in a different light.
Review: The Book of Abramelin (ed. Georg Dehn)
One of the main issues is over the practice of the Abramelin operation. In most texts this is 18 months. But in new manuscript its acually 3 years. Also they go to the trouble to include all 4 books. In that context this new translation will be used has a reference for years and centuries to come.
Its that comprehensive and authoritative. Dehn even goes to the trouble to travel to the Worms Holy Sands cemetery to research the links. For the obsessives amongst you the appendix on p shows the difference in the spelling of the spirit names between the 4 main Abramelin manuscripts.
In this context Dehn and Guths translation is a gift to historiansresearchers and occultists the world over. This will be the version that people will turn to when they need to learn about the Book of Abramelin. The foreward by Lon Milo DuQuette feels out of place in this book. When i was reading this book, i was thinking about the practioners out there who done the Abramelin Operation using Mathers version has their starting point.
One person in mind was Ramsay Dukes. Supposedly he was one of the few people to admit to doing the Abramelin Operation. For the second or third english edition Ibis Press should try to coax a foreward out of Ramsay Dukes to put the work of Dehn and Guth into its proper context.
Although there is no indexthis is one of the few times that it doesnt actually matter. I am puzzled by this since I do not see it as any improvement over the old Mathers edition. It is fair to say that it adds some bits and pieces to out knowledge but what is the quality of these additions? Very negligible in my opinion. Basically, I see this as a research done and a material handled in an inept way. A potentially valuable amount of data was mishandled in a typical new-age fashion, which is really unfortunate.
Let me substantiate these remarks. First of all, we have here an addition of an extra book. But it turns out that this new book is a collection of old-folk remedies, love charms, and other curiosa that is of a certain ethnological interest but really out of place within the context of the central concern of the book, which is the invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel.
Another addition is the restoration of the magical squares and this is a genuine improvement, although I do not consider it to be of much real value, for the reasons I will enter into subsequently. Editors Introduction abranelin Appendices are the weakest parts of the book: Thus, for example, what is one to make of the following: Our time is full of heroes from the Renaissance. I challenge anyone to find a logic in the preceding quote! I made a search and I found three things but I bet there are many more!
This is ddehn a scholarship, this is hazy thinking. There are 4 kings in Abraham that represent the 4 elements. Also, abraemlin are 8 dukes in Abramelin. Should this be any mystery? It does not matter to the author that the discovery of the Americas was still more than a hundred years ahead.
In a New Age style of thinking, you can believe as many impossible things before breakfast as you want. Thus you can identify the Abramelin spirits with the dead souls of the Ancient Egyptians, as one of the authors, Steven Guth does, and you can write the following: There is no method! Or, alternatively, anything can be a method if the person is sincere, devoted, disciplined, and persevering.
Let us just remember that the Liber Samekh is based on what was originally a ritual of exorcism! Some people have succeeded being wise, eehn being foolish, as one of the Holy Books says.
To repeat, the quality of spiritual work does not depend on the method, it depends on the arbamelin. Gordan — thanks for the amusing ddehn. Viewing 5 posts – 1 through 5 of 5 total.
